art foundations: fractured faces portrait assignment

The assignment begins with two close-up photos of you: one full face, one 3/4 profile, and one full profile. Your job is to take what you have learned about drawing the face (and everything else we have covered up to this point: contour line, geometric shape, sighting for proportion, gesture drawing, composition, shading, gridding, perspective, color relationships, etc.) and create a self-portrait.

Early on one of the toughest parts of getting portrait drawings to work is getting all the elements to work together. So, instead of trying to work them all into one drawing, we're going to work on creating the independent elements and then piece them together.

Here are the requirements of the assignment:
1. Choose the angle of your portrait.
2. Draw the contour of your head shape on the large portrait paper using the whole size of the paper.
3. In your sketch book draw the following in proper proportion to the contour of your head shape:
4 eyes (two right and two left - if you are doing full or 3/4 profile, 4 versions of the featured eye if you choose full profile)
3 versions your nose
3 versions of your mouth
2 versions of your ear or ears depending on perspective
3 versions of your hair
4. Cut and paste the best your each element onto your large portrait assignment paper
5. Using shading unite and integrate the elements together to create your portrait
6. Using your choice of complimentary colors cut and paste your choice of overlays to create ad funk to your final work.
